New Joe Ruggiero Sunbrella® Fabric Designs Featured at June Showtime

Decorative Crafts and Techniques Across the Globe Inspire High-Performance Textiles

Introducing nine new patterns in his collection of easy-to-care-for, fade-proof and bleach-cleanable Sunbrella® fabrics during June Showtime in High Point, designer Joe Ruggiero draws inspiration from global decorative crafts and techniques of yesteryear.

“For many years I’ve worked extensively with the Sunbrella design team, yet I still find myself continuously surprised at what is possible for performance fabrics,” Ruggiero says. “The innovative weaving technology allows me to design textiles that mimic handcrafted techniques and textures. My introductions for Showtime showcase upholstery fabrics that are beautiful but also soft to the touch and truly perform.”

The nine new Sunbrella styles by Ruggiero include:

Brocade
A perfect example of pushing the limits of technology is Brocade. Designed with Italian silks in mind, Ruggiero and the Sunbrella team were able to create a silk-like look that features a sophisticated floral silhouette. Brocade has a soft hand, drapes beautifully and is available in Birch, Fog, Pebble, Silk and Smoke.

Pagoda
Time-honored temple cloths from Japan are the inspiration behind Pagoda. This unique, subtle spreading pattern features high-low textures for an interesting hand. Pagoda is offered in Charcoal, Cumin, Dove, Indigo and Wren.

Sampler
Taken from the classic American needlepoint samplers, Sampler has the appearance of being hand stitched atop a hopsack ground. Sampler is available in Ash, Coastal, Denim, Indigo, Lagoon, Rustic, Tinsel and Wren.

Sash
The obi belt, or sash, of Japanese kimonos served as a muse for Sash. The fabric features a raised, textured, diamond-patterned stripe on top of a linen-like base. Sash is offered in Denim, Dove, Parchment, Sky and Smoke.

Shagreen
Derived from the beginning of the 18th century when leather was made from shark skin for decorative covers, Shagreen has a similarly subtle pattern and texture. Easily perceived as a solid, Shagreen is available in Blush, Indigo, Lagoon, Opal, Parchment, Pebble, Sangria, Sky and Wren.

Shinto
Showcasing ever-popular Shibori dyeing techniques where fabrics were tied and twisted to create patterns, Shinto’s pattern is minimal and stripe-like. Versatile and reversible, Shinto is offered in Indigo, Java, Shadow, Silver and Wren.

Switch
Featuring the widest color range of the introductions is Switch, a refined herringbone pattern that serves as an ideal go-with fabric. Switch is available in Ash, Blush, Bordeaux, Cameo, Coal, Denim, Fawn, Flax, Fox, Henna, Indigo, Juniper, Mineral, Mink, Olive, Parchment, Salt, Silver, Sprout and Wren.

Ticking
A sophisticated ticking stripe that draws from classic menswear patterns, Ticking is a lighter weight iteration of previous designs, featured in a much-desired neutral color palette. Ticking is offered in Dove, Fog, Pebble, Sepia and Wren.

Treescape
Asian wood block printing inspired Treescape. The pattern has an organic feeling and closely resembles the perfect imperfections of wood block printing. Treescape is available in Indigo, Sky, Stone, Vapor and Wren.

“Today’s technology lets us do amazing things,” Ruggiero says. “Most people don’t appreciate the new capabilities of the looms, perfectly crafting upholstery fabrics that offer design and performance. The textiles appear handcrafted and will enhance the furniture and spaces they adorn.”
